Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show Host Kevin Cole, is “Stand and Deliver” by Shake Some Action! from Fire and Ice available from Satellite 451 Records.
Last time we checked in with Seattle power pop quartet they were, well, power pop and a quartet. This new release has them dipping their collective toes into psychedelic elements a-la-Happy Mondays especially on tracks like today’s song “Stand and Deliver.” Along with the band’s evolution in sound, they have also focused more energy on instrumentation and precision. Whereas 2007’s Sunny Days Ahead was recorded live and often with just one take to capture their raw energy, tracks on this release were given the full studio treatment. The recording process was dutifully chronicled by frontman James Hall on the band’s blog. You can even download demo versions of each song to hear their full evolution.
Recently their long-time drummer Chris Campbell moved to Chile to pursue amore, which may explain why there are no live shows currently listed on either their website or their MySpace page so we will just have to be satisfied with the album for now. But you can enjoy some behind the scenes footage of James Hall from Shake Some Action! laying down guitar and vocal tracks for Fire and Ice right here:
